The future of outpatient care

DesignGroup initially was involved with WMC (Westerville Medical Campus) in a long-range master facility plan to determine what future clinical operations would be best for the campus. Working with OhioHealth leadership, DesignGroup conducted a 6-month master planning charette to best determine how to integrate new programs and achieve a consolidation of clinical groups, which would benefit from being co-located in a cohesive “One-stop-shopping” environment.

Once this successful vision was approved, DesignGroup was awarded the project with their Design-Build partner Adena. From the start, DesignGroup was committed to providing information to the DB team that would insure a “Target-Value” delivery methodology. The design team proactively communicated with the stakeholders the limits of scope and budget. We did this with the goal of creating clinical space that kept the future of Outpatient Care and Patients in mind. As the project was not only Patient-Centric, but Staff-Centric as well, the team verified the correct caregiver ratios and focused on team delivery models.

This renovation brings the new vision for Outpatient Care to life by combining Primary Care, Internal Medicine, and Urology along with Neuroscience Clinic, Neuro Rehab, and Sports Medicine. This was achieved through the consolidation of waiting spaces to reduce or get to zero wait. The centralized waiting zones allow for clearer understanding by the patient to find their clinic with less wayfinding. Additionally, the team was able to consolidate touchpoints for the patients (centralized registration zones) to help reinforce the future of waiting. The clinics were designed to create a highly flexible and collaborative care environment that fosters opportunities for the different service lines to engage patients in transformational ways. Through all of this, it was important not to lose sight of those who provide care. Our team was able to provide staff with amenities to attract and retain talent, which included work zones full of natural light that promote collaboration and respite.
