Students in the Exploring Architecture Program working on a modeling/drawing exercise at the Center for Architecture

The Exploring Program is a national career education program which provides hands-on activities in a particular career field for young students who are 14 to 21 years old. In Columbus alone, the Exploring Program partners with 40 businesses and organizations to provide a variety of experiences for students to explore their career interests during their high school years. The programs offered range from the Arts and Humanities, to Engineering and Technology, to Skilled Trades. The Columbus AIA, which is a Chapter of The American Institute of Architects, happens to be one of the partners of the Columbus Exploring Program. The derivative, the Exploring Architecture Post 909, offers a series of lectures and engaging activities for high school students who are interested in the field of architecture, design, and the related industry. Architects can build bridges out of anything!

Last week, the DesignGroup Fun Team challenged the firm to partake in a bridge building competition. For many of us, it immediately took us back to the days of architecture school when we had to design, calculate, and fabricate bridges out of balsa wood and glue. The bridge that held the most weight without destruction won. For others, the daunting task at hand reminded them of building pamam dendrimer molecular structures in college chemistry. While building a structurally capable bridge out of wood and glue is difficult in itself, the Fun Team decided to make the competition juicer by making the teams build bridges out of a pound of red and green grapes and a box of toothpicks. Demolition of the exterior façade of the dining room allowing for the new dining addition

Under the direction of construction manager, Corna Kokosing, demolition has started! Partial demolition of the façade at the dining area is complete in order to make way for an expanded dining experience. The interior of the two dining rooms and the office spaces at the entry to the school have been completely gutted, exposing layers of history, materials, and uses. Read More …

Groundbreaking ceremony

On Friday June 10^th, over 200 people gathered under a huge white tent to celebrate the groundbreaking of CSGs’ Landmark Project and to kick-off the Landmark Campaign. The ceremony was opened by Bernie Ostrowski, President, Board of Trustees, followed by Liza Lee, Head of School, and Susan Tomasky, Past Board President. Read More …
